Background and Early Life

Nancy Kacungira was born in 1986 in Dodoma, Tanzania, to Ugandan parents. Her father, Clifford Kacungira, is a pilot with a charter airline in Dodoma. She is the second-born in a family of three children, consisting of two girls and a deceased younger brother. Nancy Kacungira and her sister, Seanice, endured a difficult childhood, coping with the loss of their younger brother and their parents’ separation when they were still young.
Nancy completed her primary education at a missionary school in Dodoma and later moved to Uganda for her O and A Levels. She finished her O-level education at Namasagali boarding school in Uganda and continued to Kibuli High School for her A-levels. After completing high school, Nancy Kacungira enrolled at Makerere University, where she pursued a Bachelor of Arts degree in Design and Visual Communications. She graduated with a first-class degree and then proceeded to the University of Leeds to pursue a Master of Arts in Communication and Media Studies. Early Career

Nancy Kacungira launched her journalism career with an internship at Power FM, a Christian local radio station in Kampala while she was still at Makerere. As a presenter at the station, she performed exceptionally well, solidifying her position there. By the time she graduated, she had already risen to the position of deputy director at the station.
In 2010, Nancy Kacungira and her sister, Seanice, founded Blu Flamingo, a digital media management company responsible for promoting and managing media campaigns for various entities. Her reputation expanded from radio to television, and in 2012, Nancy left Power FM for NTV, one of East Africa’s largest media houses. She worked with NTV for over a year before relocating to KTN in Kenya as a social media editor. While working at KTN Kenya, Nancy Kacungira submitted her application for the BBC’s Komla Dumor Award in 2015. Out of 200 participants, she won the award, marking the beginning of her journey with BBC News.

Journey with BBC News

The Komla Dumor Award came with a three-month-long service with the BBC in the UK. After the three months at the BBC, Nancy returned to KTN, but Nancy Kacungira’s remarkable work with the BBC didn’t go unnoticed. It wasn’t long before the BBC permanently hired her. Her first program with the BBC was “Focus on Africa,” which she presented for two years from 2017 to 2019. Nancy went on to become a main anchor with the BBC, handling major programs like “BBC WORLD NEWS TODAY.” Alongside other programs, Nancy currently co-hosts the “Business Africa” segment with Lerato Mbele.
In 2020, Nancy Kacungira took over most of the evening output two in three weekends, on both BBC News Channel and BBC World News. Since April 2023, Nancy presents and corresponds for the new merged BBC News Channel.
